Svāmī Maṇavāḻa Māmuňigaḻ Tirunakṣatram Celebrations 2014

Upadeśa RattiŇa Mālai SANTAI

The divine experiences of Svāmī Nammāļvār and the other āļvārs were imbibed in full by our great ācāryas – especially so, by the most benevolent of them, our Svāmī Rāmānuja. The constant mental churning of the Divyaprabandhams influenced the thinking and outlook of our pūrvācāryas, and the spirit naturally issued out in their teachings and actions, many of which challenged commonly-held misbeliefs. Out of greatest compassion to the world, an enormous collection of these treasures were digested and presented to us – as a fortress of defence resembling the traditional mīmāmsā approach – by Svāmī Piḻḻai Lokācārya. This work, titled Śrīvacaṇabhūṣaṇam, is inherently very deep in philosophic aspects, to explain which, a beautiful commentary of stunning precision was written in lucid style by Svāmī Maṇavāḻa Māmuňigaḻ. Being the avatāram of the merciful Svāmī Rāmānuja, Svāmī Maṇavāḻa Māmuňigaḻ went further in kindness and authored a separate grantham – the Upadeśa Rattiňa Mālai – in simple and beautiful poetry, for the most part elicucidating the background behind Śrīvacaṇabhūṣaṇam and its deep-rootedness in the tradition of our pūrvācāryas. The remaining part of the grantham was devoted to highlighting the greatness of Śrīvacaṇabhūṣaṇam and to bringing out its key messages. Most importantly, Svāmī Maṇavāḻa Māmuňigaḻ ends the work with the phala-śruti that learning the Upadeśa Rattiňa Mālai and reflecting on it makes one become the permanent object of Svāmī Rāmānuja’s sweet grace. This, being said by Svāmī Maṇavāḻa Māmuňigaḻ himself, leaves us with no meaningful choice other than to learn and enjoy this work written keeping us in mind. Let us take advantage of this great opportunity to learn the Upadeśa Rattiňa Mālai in the traditional style for once, so it stays with us in memory for life. Let us start this now, during the season of Svāmī Maṇavāḻa Māmuňigaḻ’s and Svāmī Piḻḻai Lokācārya’s tirunakṣatrams, and go full force to master this pleasurable grantham through the coming anadhyayana period!

Upadeśa Rattiňa Mālai Santai is available through the media players embedded in this page. In addition, the Santai is available as an Android Application, which can be downloaded for free from Google Play store.

The Inspiration to the Inspired

In the disciplic lineage that we ascribe to as part of the Visishtadvaitha Srivaishnava Sampradaya the most venerated and celebrated acharya is Swami Ramanuja. We are all aware of his divine birth, deep knowledge and his unparalleled love for Sriman Narayana. It must be mentioned that Swami Ramanuja looked up to Swami Alavandar for inspiration. Swami Alavandar’s main contribution to our divine tradition is that he is the one who identified Swami Ramanuja (then known as Sri Ilayazhwar) in Kanchipuram and hailed him as the successor to adorn the pontifical seat of being the “darsana pravarthaka acharya” (preceptor to carry the divine vision forward).

Excerpts Swami Alavandar’s stotra literature are most celebrated in our sampradaya and serve as excellent works to learn methods of expression in the sanskrit language. His works are extremely polemic and served as the basis for the work by all our preceptors that followed him. Learning his works and spending time in understanding the manning contained in them is the best way to celebrate the annual birth asterism of this wonderful personality. VEDICS Foundation is proud to present a wonderful discourse delivered by Velukkudi Sri U. Ve. Krishnan Swamy at Kattumannar Kovil, the place of birth of Swami Alavandar.

True Education

Dear Readers,

Upakarma which means “beginning” in sanskrit is an annual ritual that is conducted in all Brahmin households. It signifies the day/date/asterism when a Brahmachari child, whose sacred-thread ceremony has been performed, commences his vedic studies. In the past, the day would symbolize the annual beginning of curricular studies for any brahmachari child.

Velukkudi Sri U. Ve. Krishnan Swami has delivered a beautiful discourse on the many aspects that pertain to the Upakarma festival that we celebrate. Please login with your userId to listen to the same.
