Chapter1: The Basics-6

Q:  A book with the title "108 Upanishads" has been published and a few more Upanishads have been published.  Are all these true?

A:  Until now, the following "Dasopanishads" (ten-upanishads) and a few others alone are recited with appropriate swaras by the respective Vedic pundits.

1. Easa
2. Kena
3. Kata
4. Prasna
5. Mundaka
6. Maandookya
7. Thaithreeya
8. Aithreya
9. Chaandogya
10. Brihadaaranyaka

And a few more like the Narayana Upanishad.

Sankara, Ranga Ramanuja Muni and other religious heads have provided commentaries for the above Upanishads. In addition to these, Sankara, Ramanuja and others have mentioned a few other Upanishads in their works. We can consider only these as true Upanishads. The other Upanishads as contained in printed books like the "108 Upanishads" are later creations only. Sudarsanar has clearly listed twenty-two Upanishads in his book, "Vishnu Chitha Vijayam" (refer the detailed essay under the tile, "Are Upanishads 108?" in Appendix 1 of Vol. 2). These twenty-two only have been referred to by Vedic pundits of yore and we can consider these alone as true without any doubt.

The Q&A of the day is an excerpt from "Two-fold Vedic Vision", a Sri Vaishnavite handbook based on Sri Sudarsanar’s 1008 Catechisms in Tamil written by Sri. Kidambi Sridharan. The collection contains invaluable information on the Vedas, Upanishads, Puranas, Ithihasas, the lives of Alwars, Acharyas from Sriman Nathamunigal to Sri Manavala Mamuni, the 108 Divya Desams and answers to various other related questions.  This book is available for purchase on Amazon.
