Chapter3: CHETHANA (Jiva)-13

Q:  Is it possible to wash away all our sins through noble and repentant deeds? Is it also possible to wash away the effect of good and bad deeds through retribution?

A:  It is an exercise in futility.  The cumulative mass of sins accumulated from time immemorial is so vast that any amount of good or repentant deeds are inadequate. It is like the attempt to dry up the water of a huge well with a hand-size sponge. Says, Koorathaazhvaan (contemporary senior disciple of Ramanuja): “Yath brahma kalpa niyuthaanubhavepya naasyam, Thath kilpisham srujjathi janthu riha kshanaarthe.” (The sins committed in just half a second cannot be neutralized by deeds for many thousands of years.)
