Chapter1: The Basics-8

Q:  What is the meaning of the word, ‘smrithi’? What are the smrithis and their functions?

A: "Smaryathe - ithi smrithihi" : An elucidative write-up on any Vedic sentence is called smrithi. By this definition, the elucidative work of Manu , known as Manu's 'Dharma Sasthra' and other works, which elucidate the Vedas, like the ithihasas (Ramayana and Mahabharatha) and the puranas are considered as smrithis. Vyasa's 'Brahma Soothras' also confirm this opinion. However, 'dharma sasthras' like the work of Manu etc alone are traditionally called as smrithis. A detailed list of the important dharma sasthras are discussed in Sudarsanar's 'Vishnu Chitha Vijayam - Vol III. .
